The Balafon association from the Université du Sud Toulon-Var was successful in raising nearly € 10 000 for the Great Green Wall humanitarian initiative
to fight poverty and desertification in Northern Senegal. Funding was provided by the PACA Region and the FSDIE grant provided by the University of Toulon.
The project started on the13th of August and students from different areas of interest participated in various services including: reforestation efforts, alphabetization, medical check-ups and basic computer classes.
The Great Green Wall is a collective effort piloted by the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) and includes the participation of 11 African countries: Sengal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea. The Great Green Wall is a band of forest that is 15 kilometers wide and 7000 kilometers long. It represents the fight poverty and desertification in Sub-Sahara Africa.
