During the hot and dry season in March, the average temperature is 40 °C (104 °F) in the shade and with no source of drinking water at the school the children risk severe dehydration. The nearest well is 3 kilometers from the elementary school. The lack of drinking water is a critical problem for the school. The wellbeing of the children depend both on the quality and availability of drinking water. The village of Colma has two unprotected drinking wells with no cover to prevent impurities from entering and contaminating the water. The villages main drinking well is located next to a frequently traveled dirt road; Everyday numerous transport trucks travel along this dirt road and stir up dust clouds that enter directly into the drinking well. These unprotected drinking wells promote waterborne disease such as bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, and schistosomiasis. The World Health Organization reports that diarrheal diseases cause 90% of all deaths of children under five years old in developing countries. Burkina Faso is no exception where 1 in 5 deaths for children under five years old are due to diarrheal diseases (USAID). The consumption of unsafe drinking water is one of the primary causes of diarrhea.
